The King's Singers - Estraines
"An artful composition that follows entirely in the King's Singers tradition."
Westdeutscher Allgemeine Zeitung,
12 March 2009
The Legend of Saint Wite was chosen by a BBC Competition Jury for a recording project with the Henschel Quartet and soloists from the Tölzer Knabenchor. The CD will be released by NEOS later this year.
Wite was an anchoress murdered by marauding Danes in the 10th Century and whose remains are still contained in a shrine in the Church of Candida and Holy Cross in Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset, England. The piece tells her tale and recounts, too, the histories of Admiral George Somers and the Bulgarian dissident Gyorgy Markov, both of whom are buried there.
Scored for soprano solo, high voices (SSA) and strings, The Legend of Saint Wite will be published by Cantus Quercus Press (USA) and Hayo-Music (Europe) in the original version with string quartet (where the SSA parts are soli) and for string orchestra (with SSA women's chorus).
